The “theory of evolution”, and why we need to study it.

For those who don’t know I graduated from Murray State University with a B.S. in Biology. That gives me a little different insight into the “theory of evolution” that others may not have. Before I was a Christian the more I studied biology, chemistry, microbiology, cell biology and many other courses like ecology and ecosystems, the more I realized that none of these scientific courses in practice or theory supported the idea of evolution. Notice I called it the idea of evolution, not theory.  Now the question, Why do we need to study about it?

1. Evolution is being taught in our schools, and I use this term schools generically. I realize all schools aren’t teaching it, but the ones that are teaching evolution, which is a majority, are teaching it as fact. As much of a fact as 2 + 2 = 4, or that gravity holds things to the earth’s surface.
“Bob Martin’s book Missing links is slated to be published by the Massachusetts Company Jones & Bartlett during the summer of 2003. The book is composed of two sections; the first is a primer on evolutionary science, with special weight given to evidence from the fossil record. The second section is a compilation of case histories of evolutionary transitions at all chronological scales. There are chapters on the origin of life on Earth, the earliest organisms, whales, horses, birds, the reptile-mammal transition, vole evolution, the fish-tetrapod transition, human evolution, and a final chapter demonstrating significant change during modern time. The book is designed to be used as ancillary reading in a variety of college courses, and also as a general reference to inspire discussion on the creationist-evolution controversy.” (Taken from Bio News Murray State University ,Volume 4, May 2003, pg. 2)
This should be proof enough that this is not an issue that has past us by. It amazes me that as far advanced as we are in technology today this is still an ongoing topic of controversy at universities in our country today.  The Southern Baptist Union says that over 60% of those who profess to be  “Southern Baptists” that go to state universities lose their faith because of this teaching. These are Southern Baptists, a denomination, not what we would recognize as Christians.  MY POINT IS: this teaching effects us, whether we know it or not. It effects our children and it will effect the future if Christ’s Church.
I know a Christian family who recently sent their oldest daughter to the University of Kentucky this year. In her sociology class her professor asked her why she believed in God. Now remember this young lady was in her first few weeks on a college campus, and was taught by her parents to respect her schoolteachers. This college professor intimidated her. This young lady is a Christian, was taught Christian values and God’s word all of her life, and I personally taught her and several others in a high school class on evidences. I personally know that she had a better answer than she gave when the college professor singled her out and stood directly in front of her, “because my parents raised me that way”. This teaching calls out our young people, attacks and intimidates them in their first few weeks of college. So it does effect our young people, and we as parents need to prepare our children, grand children, nieces, and nephews, all of our young people to give an answer, and defend what they believe.

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; 1 Peter 3:15

One concept that we need to teach our young people today is that someone can ask a one sentence question that may take a ten minute answer to answer completely. In this “microwave society” we live in many times young people and for that matter older individuals will not give a good or complete answer to a question because of what they may look like to their friends or peers. We can not accept this, we need to teach our young people that when our faith is involved only complete answers will be acceptable, but also in a way that teaches with meekness and fear, not intimidation.

Why do we need to study it?

Evolution is just plain old false teaching.

But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgement has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.
2 Peter 2: 1-3

What do these verses warn us about? What number will follow their ways? How will they exploit you? (2 Peter 2:1-3) Who will follow their destructive ways?  Many, from the Greek word polus (pole-us) meaning plenteous, many, abundant, the largest number or very large. So when we look around in society I personally see a large number who follow false teaching.    “By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words” These false teachers will appeal to emotions and things of this world in order to lure us into believing their false words.

John also warns us of the appeal of things of this world:

Do not love the world or the things of the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world-the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life- is not of the Father but is of the world, And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.  1 John 2:15-17

Paul writes in 1 Cor. 1: 22; For the Jews request a sign and the Greeks seek after wisdom. The Greeks of today are the universities and the professors who teach in them. I know many or should I say most are far too intelligent in their own eyes to believe that God created the universe and the Gospel of Christ. They believe in evolution by default because they do not want to be thought of as nor intelligent.

For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgement; and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly; and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly; and delivered righteous Lot who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked (for  that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds)- then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgement, and especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority. They are presumptuous, self-willed. They are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries, whereas angels, who are greater in power and might, do not bring a reviling accusation them before the Lord.
2 Peter 2: 4-11

Who were delivered to destruction? The angels, the ancient world, cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Why? Because of sin and ungodliness  Who were saved because of their righteousness? Noah and his family, Noah was named as a preacher of righteousness, and Lot who was named righteous.  How are the righteous treated by the world? According to this passage and what one may see in society today the world oppresses the righteous.

Thought Question: If one is taught to believe from a young age that their ancestors were monkeys, apes, fish, lizards…etc. Where would their moral system come from?

But these, like natural brute beasts made to be caught and destroyed, speak evil of the things they do not understand, and will utterly perish in their own corruption, and will receive the wages of unrighteousness, as those who count it pleasure to carouse in the daytime. They are spots and blemishes, carousing in their own deceptions while they feast with you, having eyes full of adultery and that cannot cease from sin, enticing unstable souls. They have a heart trained in covetous practices, and are accursed children. They have forsaken the right way and gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;  2 Peter 2: 12-15

Are we no different than these natural brute beasts Peter describes? Who are made to be caught and destroyed, who speak evil of the things they don’t understand, who count it pleasure to carouse in the daytime in their own deceptions, with eyes full of adultery, who cannot cease from sin, and have hearts trained in covetous practices.

This is the moral system that evolution teaches. Evolution teaches against biblical principles and that there is no difference between animals and us. Animals do pretty much what they want and lasciviousness wouldn’t be a sin to an animal,  (surely one cannot help themselves from the lusts of the world if they are just an animal). There are no eternal consequences for animals that give into passions of the flesh.

I say we are different, the Bible teaches different and evidence and science shows it is different.

For when they speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who have actually escaped from those who live in error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage.
        2 Peter 2: 18-19

How will these false teachers try to get us to see it their way instead of God’s way? (2 Peter 2:18-19)
1. They will speak great swelling words of emptiness; today some of this is called political correctness.
2. They will allure through lusts of the flesh and lewdness.
3. They will promise liberty while they, themselves are slaves of corruption.

Just a thought: If we were taught from the time we were 6 or 7 that we are no different than animals, that we have the same desires, the same needs, and the same wants as an animal; for a whole generation as we have because the Bible has been taken out of our schools and isn’t studied in America’s homes… Could this be a leading factor in the moral decline of our society today?

How will we know these false teachers?

“Therefor by their fruits you will know them.”
        Matt. 7: 20
